Breast Prostheses

(The following applies to all NHS hospitals where cancer patients from Lanarkshire are treated.)

Following breast surgery, you may, after discussion with your consultant and cancer nurse, decide that you want to be fitted for a breast prosthesis. The process of getting a prosthesis is free and can be handled sensitively and discreetly in the hospital you are attending.

Fitting
Each prosthesis is created for the individual patient to ensure the greatest level of comfort and the most natural appearance possible. The hospital you are attending has its own team of highly skilled orthotists whose job it is to ensure that your prosthesis is right for you.

Pocketing Service
The hospital will also offer you a pocketing service to adapt your underwear for the prosthesis. Your own bra can be sent away to have a pocket fitted to hold the prosthesis in place. This service is also free for from 2 to 3 bras per year depending on which hospital you are attending.

The Emotional Impact
We do understand that losing a breast can be a huge emotional strain on a woman but there is help available. Use the support of family and friends to talk over your problems and concerns. Talk to your consultant and cancer nurse who have seen many people in your situation.

If you feel you require more formal support ask your consultant and cancer nurse about counselling. They may put you in touch with a Macmillan nurse or support group. Ask your GP who can also refer you for counselling.

For further information about breast prosthetics and support organisations see the online resources section (use the navigation bar on the left), or visit the Organisations and Support Groups and Emotional Support sections of this site.
