Transport for treatment: The Lanarkshire Cancer Care trust (LCCT)
What is Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust?
LCCT is a charity whose main work involves providing volunteer drivers
to take cancer patients to and from appointments for hospital, clinic,
day-care etc. No charge is made to patients for the service.
Who can use the driver service?
90% of all our referrals come via the Macmillan nurses, local hospitals,
Health Centres etc., but any cancer patient living within the boundaries
of Lanarkshire Health Board can ask us for help. The service is primarily
for people who have no other means of getting to their appointments
and who could not cope with prolonged travel by hospital transport.
How is the Trust funded?
Approx. 90% of our funding is raised by the public in the form of
donations, special efforts etc. Salaries are partially covered by
grants from Lanarkshire Health Board {ongoing) and, temporarily, by
the Community Fund.
North Lanarkshire Council Social Work Dept. provides our office and
phone free of charge. South Lanarkshire Council has made small annual
grants since 1999.
What is the money spent on?
Around 100 drivers from allover the county give their time and vehicles
free of charge. Most claim fortnightly for petrol used according to
distances travelled. Cur- rently, around £2,500 is required
every week to meet this mileage claim.
Who runs the Trust?
The office is manned by one full time (Morag Moodie)
and two part time (Margaret Wragg and Joanne Robinson) salaried
coordinators and a number of volunteers. The Board of Trustees, all
volunteers, oversee the business affairs, monies etc.
