Cancer Prevention & Screening

The Scottish Breast Cancer Screening Programme (SBSP)

The SBSP was established in the late 1980s.

Breast screening is a three-yearly x-ray test for breast cancer. There are two stages to screening. For many women all that is needed is one or two x-rays of each breast to confirm that all is well. One out of thirteen women need to come back for the second stage and again, many women will find that all is well. For those women where breast cancer is diagnosed, finding it early gives the best chance for successful treatment. All women in Scotland aged 50 - 70 who are registered with doctors are invited for screening every 3 years.

If you are concerned about breast cancer, no matter what age you are, please contact your GP for more information.
